The F5E3 error means door lock can't unlock — the control board detected a door lock failure at the end of the cycle.
The Maytag washer displays the F5E3 error and halts the current cycle until the underlying problem is fixed.
Check these in order. The first cause accounts for the majority of F5E3 errors.
The most common cause. A brief power outage or surge mid-cycle can freeze the lock in the engaged position. The control board reset on power-cycle usually clears this.
The spring-loaded plunger inside the lock wears down after thousands of cycles. When the spring can't retract the plunger, the door stays mechanically locked even after the electrical signal to unlock.
Vibration gradually loosens the connector between the lock assembly and the control board. An open circuit makes the board think the lock is still engaged.
Small debris in the door striker opening can prevent the latch from fully retracting. Inspect the striker plate for lint buildup, broken plastic, or foreign objects.
Follow these in order. Stop as soon as the error clears.
A hard reset often releases a frozen lock actuator. This is the first and most likely fix.
Plug back in. Listen for the unlock click and try the door handle before starting a new cycle. If it opens, run a test cycle to confirm the lock engages and disengages normally.
Look into the door striker opening for lint, debris, or broken plastic. Clear any obstruction. Check that the door latch hook moves freely when pressed.
Unplug again. Remove the top panel to access the lock harness connector. Disconnect and firmly reconnect it. Check pins for corrosion or burn marks.
If all above steps fail, the lock mechanism itself has worn out. Disconnect the harness, remove the door seal, unscrew the lock from the door frame, install the new assembly, and test.
