The 5C error means drain fault — the dishwasher failed to drain within the required time. It may also appear as 5E on some models.
The Samsung dishwasher displays the 5C error and halts the current cycle until the underlying problem is fixed.
Check these in order. The first cause accounts for the majority of 5C errors.
The cylindrical filter at the bottom of the Samsung dishwasher tub is the first place to check. Food debris, grease, and mineral deposits block water flow to the drain pump.
The drain hose needs a high loop (minimum 20 inches) before descending to the sink drain. Without it, water siphons back. Also check for kinks behind the unit.
If connected to a garbage disposal, the inlet port can accumulate food residue — or the knockout plug was never removed at installation.
If filter and hose are clear, the pump impeller may be jammed or the pump motor failed. Listen during the drain phase — humming with no water movement confirms pump failure.
Follow these in order. Stop as soon as the error clears.
Cut power at the outlet or the circuit breaker.
Remove the lower rack. Twist the cylindrical filter counterclockwise and lift it out. Remove the flat mesh filter beneath it. Wash both under hot running water with a soft brush. Reinstall flat filter first, then twist the cylindrical filter clockwise until locked.
Pull the dishwasher forward to inspect the drain hose. It must loop up to at least 20 inches before descending to the drain. Secure the high loop with a zip tie if needed. Straighten any kinks.
Run the garbage disposal for 30 seconds to clear the drain line. Check the disposal's dishwasher inlet port for buildup. If the disposal is new, confirm the knockout plug was removed during installation.
With the filter clean and hose correct, run a Quick cycle and listen during drain. If you hear the pump humming without water movement, the impeller is jammed or the motor has failed — access the pump via the base panel and replace.
