The hE1 error means heater element circuit fault — dryer not heating or overheating.
The Samsung dryer displays the hE1 error and halts the current cycle until the underlying problem is fixed.
Check these in order. The first cause accounts for the majority of hE1 errors.
The heating element is a coiled resistance wire. Over time (or after a vent blockage causes overheating) the coil breaks, cutting the heating circuit. Very common in electric dryers.
A safety thermal fuse cuts the heating circuit if the dryer overheats — typically from a blocked vent. Once blown, it must be replaced (doesn't reset). Always clear the vent before replacing.
The high-limit thermostat also cuts heat if temperature exceeds safe limits. Like the thermal fuse, it's a one-time safety device on many models.
A blocked vent restricts airflow and causes the heater area to overheat, tripping fuses and thermostats. Always diagnose the vent before replacing heating components.
Follow these in order. Stop as soon as the error clears.
Cut power and disconnect from the wall outlet.
Use a vent cleaning brush kit to clear lint from the full duct run to the exterior cap. A blocked vent is the root cause of most thermal component failures.
Locate the thermal fuse on the exhaust duct inside the back panel. Test with a multimeter — no continuity means it's blown. Replace before replacing the element.
Access the heating element housing (usually through the rear panel). Test coil resistance — a good element reads 8–16 Ω. OL reading means the coil is broken.
Clip multimeter leads to thermostat terminals. Should show continuity at room temperature. OL reading means it's failed open.
Replace whichever component failed. If the vent was blocked, also replace the thermal fuse as a precaution even if it tested good — they degrade near-failure.
