The F5 E1 error means lid switch open — washer detects the lid as open during the spin phase.
The Whirlpool top-load washer displays the F5 E1 error and halts the current cycle until the underlying problem is fixed.
Check these in order. The first cause accounts for the majority of F5 E1 errors.
The lid strike (the plastic tab on the underside of the lid) must engage the lid switch body on the tub rim. If the strike is broken or the lid is slightly warped, it won't reach.
The lid switch itself (a small electrical switch) can fail open-circuit, sending a permanent 'lid open' signal to the control board even when the lid is physically closed.
A forcefully opened lid or a moved machine can bend the hinges, causing the lid to close slightly out of alignment and miss the switch.
The wire harness between the lid switch and control board can break at the connector or along the harness.
Follow these in order. Stop as soon as the error clears.
Cut power before any inspection.
Look at the plastic strike on the underside of the lid. If it's cracked, chipped, or missing, it needs to be replaced.
Close the lid and verify it closes evenly without rocking. Misalignment indicates a hinge issue.
Disconnect the lid switch wiring connector. Test across switch terminals — should show continuity when the lid strike is manually pressed into the switch body.
If the switch tests open-circuit, replace the lid switch assembly (~$15–35). It's typically held by two screws under the top panel.
If the switch tests OK, inspect the harness from switch to control board for cuts or loose connectors.
