The Ld error means long drain — washer taking too long to pump out water.
The Whirlpool top-load washer displays the Ld error and halts the current cycle until the underlying problem is fixed.
Check these in order. The first cause accounts for the majority of Ld errors.
Lint, coins, and debris accumulate in the drain pump over time and restrict flow. This is the most common cause of Ld in Whirlpool top-loaders.
The drain hose behind the machine can get pinched against the wall, especially after the machine has been moved or serviced.
If the drain hose outlet is higher than 8 inches above the floor, the pump works against additional head pressure. Verify hose routing against spec.
If the pump cavity is clear and the hose is unobstructed but the drain cycle runs indefinitely with weak or no water flow, the pump motor is likely failing.
Follow these in order. Stop as soon as the error clears.
Cut power before accessing the drain pump.
Pull the machine away from the wall and straighten any kinks in the drain hose.
The drain hose exit point should be 24–96 inches above the floor (refer to your model's manual for exact spec).
On Whirlpool top-loaders the drain pump is typically accessed by removing the cabinet front panel or tilting the machine back. Remove debris from the pump and impeller.
Restore power and run a spin-only cycle. Listen for the pump motor running. If you hear no motor sound and the tub won't drain, replace the pump.
Drain pumps for Whirlpool top-loaders run $25–50 and are typically replaceable with basic tools.
