The F5E3 error means door lock can't unlock — the lid lock assembly is preventing the door from opening after a cycle.
The Whirlpool washer displays the F5E3 error and halts the current cycle until the underlying problem is fixed.
Check these in order. The first cause accounts for the majority of F5E3 errors.
If the washer lost power mid-cycle, the lock can freeze in the closed position. A power-cycle often resets the lock actuator and allows it to release.
The plastic plunger and spring in the lock wear down with repeated use. When the spring weakens, the plunger doesn't retract properly after the lock signal is released.
The connector between the control board and the lock assembly can work loose over time. An intermittent connection causes the board to think the lock is still engaged.
Less common. If the board is faulty, it may not send the unlock signal after the cycle completes. Test by replacing the lid lock first — it's cheaper and more commonly the culprit.
Follow these in order. Stop as soon as the error clears.
Disconnecting power resets the control board and lock actuator. This resolves the error in many cases without any parts replacement.
Restore power. You should hear a click or buzz as the lock releases. Try opening the door immediately after powering on, before starting a new cycle.
If the door opens, run a short Spin Only cycle to confirm the lock engages and disengages normally. If the door locked during spin, check whether it releases when the cycle ends.
If the power-cycle didn't help, unplug and access the lid lock connector (under the top panel). Disconnect and reconnect the harness firmly. Check for corrosion on the connector pins.
If the wiring is fine but F5E3 persists, the lock assembly itself has failed. Replacement is straightforward — unplug harness, unscrew 2–3 screws, swap in new assembly, reassemble, and test.
