The E1 / E2 error means door latch fault — washer not detecting the door as securely locked.
The GE front-load washer displays the E1 / E2 error and halts the current cycle until the underlying problem is fixed.
Check these in order. The first cause accounts for the majority of E1 / E2 errors.
GE front-load washers require a firm push to fully engage the latch. An incompletely closed door is the most common cause of E1/E2.
Any item trapped in the rubber door gasket prevents the door from closing fully. Inspect the entire seal before assuming a component failure.
The plastic latch hook and/or door lock switch wear over time. A cracked hook or failed switch triggers E1/E2 even with a firm close.
The wiring between the door lock and control board can chafe near the hinge area after repeated door cycles.
Follow these in order. Stop as soon as the error clears.
Open the door and run your hand around the full rubber gasket. Remove any clothing.
Close door with a deliberate push until the latch clicks.
Cut power before further inspection.
Look at the latch tongue and lock body. Visible cracks or broken hooks indicate replacement needed.
Disconnect the switch wiring and test with a multimeter — should show continuity when manually depressed. OL = replace.
GE front-load door lock assemblies typically attach with two screws behind the door frame trim (~$20–45).
