The E3 error means drain fault — washer unable to drain water within the allowed time.
The GE front-load washer displays the E3 error and halts the current cycle until the underlying problem is fixed.
Check these in order. The first cause accounts for the majority of E3 errors.
The drain pump filter collects lint, coins, and debris. A full or clogged filter is the most common cause of E3 in GE front-loaders — check this first.
The drain hose can kink behind the machine or become partially blocked with lint debris, restricting drain flow.
If the drain hose exit point is too high, the pump works against excessive head pressure and can't empty the drum in time.
If the filter is clear and the hose is unobstructed, but you hear no pump noise during drain cycle, the pump motor has failed.
Follow these in order. Stop as soon as the error clears.
Cut power before opening the pump filter.
Locate the small access panel at the bottom-front of the machine. Place towels and a shallow pan down first.
Most GE front-loaders have a small drain hose next to the filter — pull it out, uncap, and let water drain into your pan.
Unscrew the filter cap counterclockwise. Remove all lint, coins, or debris. Rinse the filter under running water.
Trace the drain hose from the machine to the standpipe or sink drain. Straighten kinks and confirm the outlet height is within spec.
Reinstall filter, restore power, run spin-only cycle. Replace pump if motor doesn't run.
